Let’s start at the beginning, or at least get close. Jazz has never been “free”. It was and is a music born of suffering, strife, but ultimately also a steadfast unwillingness to give up - of adaptations made not out of desire but out of the basic need to survive.
Kansas City is unquestionably rich with jazz; it’s being played everywhere. Clubs, restaurants, hotels, even at the airport and in movie theater lounges. It would be easy to think that every city sounds like this, but they don’t.
We all have our favorite spots, don’t we? Favorite comfy chair, favorite bar stool, favorite park bench. Well, my favorite spot (aside from my couch) is anywhere I can see and hear music, and my favorite among THAT is jazz.
